Why do artists leave royalties uncollected?

The music royalty system is fragmented across dozens of collecting societies, registries, and platforms — each with its own registration process, membership requirements, and payout timelines. Most independent artists focus on creating and releasing music, and the administrative side gets missed or deferred until it is too late to recover historical income.

The four most commonly missed royalty streams are: PRS performance royalties (requiring active membership and work registration), mechanical royalties via MCPS (requiring ISWC codes and registration), neighbouring rights via PPL (a separate registration from songwriting rights), and international royalties collected through reciprocal society agreements.

Historical uncollected royalties are often unrecoverable after a certain period — collecting societies typically hold unclaimed income for a limited number of years before distributing it to registered members. The sooner these registrations are in place, the more income can be attributed correctly.
